What is a crofter?

A crofter on the Isle of Skye is part farmer, part custodian of the land, working a small holding known as a croft, often passed down through generations. Life on the croft is shaped by the seasons and the island’s famously changeable weather, with sheep or cattle grazing on rough pasture alongside small areas used for growing vegetables or animal feed.

Crofting has never been an easy way of life, but it remains an important part of Skye’s culture and landscape, helping to maintain traditional communities and manage the land in a way that has changed little over many generations. Today, many crofters combine crofting with other work, but the connection to the land, livestock and local community remains at its heart.
