Burns Night in Scotland is an annual celebration honoring the life and poetry of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns. Held on January 25th, this event marks the poet’s birthday with lively festivities that pay tribute to his work, heritage, and Scottish culture.
The centerpiece of Burns Night is the traditional Burns Supper. Typically, the supper begins with the Haggis, carried by the chef, being piped into the gathering . One of the highlights of the evening is the “Address to a Haggis,” where the haggis is presented to the diners with great ceremony. A recitation of Burns’ famous poem “Address to a Haggis” accompanies the cutting of the haggis, often done by some well kent face in the area.
The main course always features haggis, a traditional Scottish dish made from sheep’s offal, oatmeal, suet, and spices, accompanied by mashed potatoes (“tatties”) and mashed turnips (“neeps”). “The Selkirk Grace,” a short prayer attributed to Burns often starts the proceedings.

Throughout the evening, guests enjoy lively speeches such as “The toast to the Lassies” and “The reply from the lassies” , poetry readings (no supper is complete without Tam o’ Shanter), and toasts with Scotch whisky. The “Immortal Memory” toast is a particularly special part of the evening, where a speaker reflects on the life and work of Robert Burns, celebrating his impact on literature and culture.
